Forging a knife means heating high-carbon steel to about 1,900°F and hammering it to shape in seven stages: draw out the bar, forge the tip and profile, forge the bevels, normalize, grind, harden in an oil quench, and temper in an oven at 375–400°F before fitting the handle.
This is the process we teach in our knife classes, written out so you know what you're getting into. Forging a knife is not delicate work, it's controlled, repetitive, and surprisingly physical. A first blade takes most of a day.

The seven steps
1. Draw out the bar
Heat the steel to a bright orange (about 1,900°F) and hammer to lengthen and even out your stock. Stop hammering when the glow drops to dull red, around 1,500°F, cold-working carbon steel is how beginners put cracks in a blade they haven't finished yet.
2. Forge the tip and profile
Work the point with angled blows over the far edge of the anvil, then even out the spine and edge line until the silhouette looks like the knife you want. Leave the edge about the thickness of a dime , never forge it sharp.
3. Forge the bevels
Angle the blade on the anvil face and hammer down the length to push the bevels in. Two things happen that surprise everyone: the blade curves toward the spine as the edge stretches, and it may warp sideways. Both are corrected with the hammer in later heats.
4. Normalize
Heat to non-magnetic (about 1,475°F for 1084, test it with a magnet), then let it air-cool to black. Do this three times. Normalizing relieves forging stress and refines grain, which is the difference between a tough blade and a blade that snaps.
5. Grind and pre-finish
With the blade still soft, clean up the profile and bevels with a file or belt grinder and drill any handle pins. Getting to 220 grit now saves hours after hardening.
6. Harden, the quench
Bring the blade evenly to non-magnetic plus a shade, hold briefly, then plunge it spine-last, straight down into warm canola oil and hold it still. Ten seconds later the steel is glass-hard and glass-brittle. A file should skate off it. This is where most first blades are made or lost.
7. Temper, then handle
Within an hour, bake the blade at 375–400°F for two one-hour cycles, cooling between them. This trades a little hardness for the toughness that keeps an edge from chipping. Then fit scales or a wrap, final sand, and sharpen.
Five mistakes beginners make
- Hammering cold steel. Below dull red, put it back in the fire.
- Overheating to sparks. Yellow-white and sparking means you're burning carbon out of the steel.
- Forging the edge too thin. A paper-thin edge cracks in the quench.
- Skipping normalization. It's boring, it's invisible, and it's what makes the blade survive.
- Forgetting to temper. A hardened, untempered blade will break, sometimes in your hand.

Can you forge a knife in one day?
Yes. In a full-day class you can forge, grind, heat treat, and handle a small knife. Forging the blade itself takes roughly one to two hours; grinding and finishing take the rest.
What temperature do you forge a knife at?
Work between about 1,600°F and 2,000°F, a bright orange to light yellow glow. Stop hammering when the steel drops to a dull red, around 1,500°F, or you risk cracking the blade.
Do you need an anvil to forge a knife?
You need a hard, heavy steel face. A proper anvil is ideal, but a large piece of scrap steel or a section of rail works for a first knife. In our classes all tools, steel, and safety gear are provided.
