I first met the great folks from Riffs workshop at the Ulster County fair, and they have been incredibly helpful and friendly. I have been thinking about getting into blacksmithing for a while and, I just took a forge your own blade class and it was great! Frank takes the time to understand each students existing skill and knowledge level and works with them to develop their blacksmithing skills. During the class I learned basics of how to use a forge, metal working temperatures, hammer and anvil techniques, grinding, and heat treating. Overall it was a fantastic class, Frank was great to work with, and I left with an amazing knife! Highly recommend Riffs workshop, and I think I'll definitely go back again in the future! jay wally2024-09-15Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a great experience working with Frank Rifflard, Blacksmith, at Riff’s Workshop. We have an old Dutch door that was missing a bracket and we needed to get it replaced. We sent Frank some photos and explained what we needed. He let us know that he could do the job. We took the top part of the door to Frank and he forged a bracket for the door that works perfectly! He even forged an additional bracket just in case we needed it! The work was performed quickly and at a reasonable price. Frank is knowledgeable, skilled and great to work with. We highly recommend him for your blacksmithing needs! Kenny Goddard2024-01-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recently, my two sons and I had the pleasure of attending a 2-day blacksmithing course at Riffs Blacksmithing, run by Frank. Our experience was nothing short of awesome! Frank's expertise in blacksmithing was evident from the get-go. He was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly attentive to safety, ensuring that all of us were always in a secure environment. What stood out the most was Frank's ability to balance safety with fun. He engaged with my boys in a manner that made learning enjoyable and exciting for them. Their enthusiasm throughout the course is a testament to Frank's skill as an instructor. The course itself was well-structured, offering a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on experience. Frank's teaching style was adaptable, catering to both beginners like us and more experienced attendees. The workshop was well-equipped, allowing us to get a real feel of blacksmithing. As a father, I found this weekend to be an invaluable bonding experience with my sons. It was not just about learning a new skill but also about creating memories that we will cherish for a long time. I highly recommend Riffs Blacksmithing to anyone looking for a unique and enriching experience. Whether you're a novice or someone with a bit of experience, you'll find something valuable in Frank's classes. T Lewis2023-02-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Super easy to book an appointment for knife sharpening. So nice and helpful. Love having sharp knives!! Holly Deakyne2022-12-07Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My experience with knife sharpening was great. He sharpened several of my kitchen knives of varying lengths, shapes, and uses. They are holding their edge several months out, and I’m very happy with the results. I also placed special order with him – one of my knife handles was plastic/resin was broken, and I asked if he would be willing to replace it with wood. He advised on the different types of woods that would be appropriate for every day use and helped me choose one. The handle is beautiful. He gets my highest recommendation. We tried several different methods to get it out, brought it to the hardware store and had 2 different handy mans take a look without any luck. We brought the door to Riff’a and we picked it up a few days later brand new. He was very responsive and a pleasure to work with. Would definitely recommend!!!
At Riff’s Workshop, we blend traditional forging techniques with modern tools to craft strong, functional, and lasting pieces.

Every forged creation starts with precision, patience, and heat. We carefully prepare each piece, choosing the right steel and controlling the fire to achieve optimal workability. From the first hammer strike to the final detail, our focus is on strength, durability, and craftsmanship.
The ancient and powerful craft of shaping metal through heat, raw strength and conforming it to your will — where fire meets steel, and raw strength gives form, the only limitation is your imagination.
This age-old tradition has many techniques, methods, and forms to achieve a wide range of results. It is the act of allowing the internal grain of the steel to reform and realign itself after being shaped into what you decided it would become. It's similar to how our finest soldiers are molded into elite warriors—then given a brief break after AIT to reunite with their families and find their center.
A transformative heat treatment where steel is pushed to its limits in an extremely explosive process —heated to an extremely high temperature and rapidly cooled in seconds, often in oil or water. This locks the structure into a hardened state, increasing strength and wear resistance. It's the finest moment where a steel creation or blades soul is born into this world. Though it is true and hardened it is also brittle if you don't do this next process carefully!
Tempering a blade is the art of taking steel that’s been hardened to the edge of brittleness and giving it a soul. Through controlled heat, the blade is carefully brought back from the brink — trading fragility for resilience. It's the moment where fire and precision meet to create a weapon that’s not just sharp, but battle-ready: strong, flexible, and forged for endurance.
